故意

gùyì - deliberately, on purpose

I learnt this word today when Victoria taught me a fun Chinese game, one that I'd actually thought of as an idea for this blog. In the game, people take turns to say a word (in Chinese). The first character each word must be the same the last character of the previous word; it's a bit like the English game were you have to say a word beginning with the same letter that a previous word ended in. Our first attempt, went something like this:

你好 - 好奇 - 奇怪 - 怪物 - 物价 - 价钱 - 钱包

故意 turned up later on when we were at a Malaysian restaurant (and I think we were playing the game backwards, just to show off). I later heard the word (I think) in a song, but unfortunately, I can't remember which song it was.

他故意不到会。
He deliberately missed the meeting.
