chòu - stench, stink, smelly

I've seen this word a few times without knowing what it is. It seems it's considered quite a basic word and yet I've never learnt it. I learnt it today on an absolute beginner lesson at Popup Chinese - they always have weird vocab and dialogues. Interestingly, 丑 (chǒu) means ugly: chou is just a bad sound. I picked the sentence below because it's good to see that 臭 can be used in the same metaphorical way as in English, and because 贪污 was on my Smart.fm today.

这件事从头到尾都散发著(贪污腐化的)臭味!
The whole business stinks (of corruption)!
