字.

  • 藻类

    zǎolèi - algae

My new job will involve research into the algae, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

    我研究藻类。
    I do research on algae.

  • 开始

    kāishǐ - begin

I picked this word despite knowing it for some time because it seems appropriate, since today I started my new postdoc job.

    我今天开始新工作。
I started my new job today.

  • 搬家

    bānjiā - move house

I moved house today, which involved hiring a van and carrying all my belongings up two flights of stairs.

Let's consider the pros and cons of moving house.

  • 打法

dǎfǎ - play (a card), make a move in a game

I spent a lot of today working on a Magic: the Gathering game. It's quite good programming practise, trying to solve problems I've not tackled previously. Victoria has taught me this word a couple of times, but I can never remember it. I had to pick this word as I've already used 游戏, though it seems mainly to be used to mean 'tie a tie'.

  • zhěng - exactly; whole; orderly; repair; make sb suffer

A man came to finally fix the phone line today. Turned out that the socket had got too damp. I've already had the word 修理, so I picked 整, which has many meanings, all generally involving making things complete and orderly. Also to punish someone, which seems a bit odd, unless you're punishing someone in order to redress an imbalance.

    他吃了一整盒巧克力。
He has eaten a whole box of chocolates.

  • 思想

sīxiǎng - thought, idea; thinking, ideology

A word I learnt a while ago, but I'm never really sure when to use it. I picked it today because I've been reading about the philosopher, 庄子.

    学生们都被他的思想吸引住了。
The students were fascinated by his ideas.

  • - gap, crack, rift

I picked this word today because I changed by evolution program to also try to evolve gap penalty scores. After lots of work it looks like it won't work particularly well. I'm not sure the character I've picked is appropriate, but it will do.

    她透过帘子的缝隙观望。
She looked through a gap in the curtains.

  • 定式

dìngshì - joseki (the common opening sequences in Go)

Victoria and I have been studying Go recently, and I came across the Chinese for joseki (which is how to pronounce the characters in Japanese). Looking through my Chinese Go books, I'm slowing learning Chinese terms for various aspects of the game. 定式 literally means 'fixed patterns'.

    你应该学定式。

    You should study joseki.

  • 其他

    qítā - other

Today we watched The Lives of Others, which I bought on DVD about two years ago on the recommendation of a friend. I've only just got around to watching it; it was very good. We also went out with friends for breakfast at Atomic Burgers, went to Go shop where Victoria bought a book on Joseki, went to a new old-style sweetshop and played a long game of Go. All in all, a good day.

  • 野餐

    yěcān - picnic

Today we went out for a picnic with some Flickr friends. Victoria and the more musical friends played guitar and ukulele. We thought we had brought some chilled white wine, but it turned out to be sherry. Didn't stop us from drinking it though.
