Extracting map information from an SVG

This post explains how I converted an SVG map from Wikipedia into a map in the Khan Academy Computer Science environment. At the bottom of the post is the Python script I wrote to do the conversion.

The final map on Khan Academy

Look back at 2013

This year, Khan Academy continued to dominate my time, becoming a full time (ish) project, while I gave up science and neglected my Chinese and this website.

Spinning globe

This post describes my highly convoluted method of making an animated globe using Khan Academy's computer science framework.

A few weeks ago I found a set of coordinates for a world map in JSON format. I can't remember where exactly, but I think it was via a StackOverflow question. The first thing I did was to convert it into an SVG world map, because I like SVG and I've been meaning to get a world map for a while.

Look back at 2012

In 2011 I spent much of my time on various websites. In 2012 I did much the same, only all my effort was focused on Khan Academy. I also had a bit more success in my science, publishing my second paper on a bioinformatics algorithm: MergeAlign. I also went to Cilia conference in London, followed by a Chlamydomonas conference in Germany. Finally, to round off a year of travel, we had a holiday to Singapore to meet Victoria's family.

Running Khan Academy programs on your computer

I've noticed a lot of people asking how they can run the programs they've seen or created on Khan Academy's computer science area, so I've written this post to explain how to (sort of) achieve it. Note that not all Khan Academy programs will run on your computer.

Experimenting with the Khan Academy API

In the last month or so, I've managed to more than triple the number of Earth badges I have on Khan Academy just by focussing on getting the Sub-light Speed and 299,792,458 Meters per Second badges, particularly on the simple exercises. I worked out on which exercises to focus by creating a spreadsheet of all the exercises and all the badges I had for each exercise. I filled out the spreadsheet with a combination of screen-scraping and manual data-entry.

Look back at 2011

In 2011 I seemed to spend a lot of time trying to make various numbers increase, such as my Khan Academy energy points, StackOverflow points, and blog visitors. This may be a result of the increasing "gamification" of websites, or maybe just that I'm so easily drawn in by such mechanics.

How to get black hole badges on Khan Academy

The Black Hole badges are Khan Academy are legendary and unknown, so a lot of people want to know how to get them. The code describing what they are for used to be available here, but that code is out-dated and says that the Atlas badge is for completing 150 exercises.

Khan Academy

A few months ago, I wrote about various places to learn online, including the Khan Academy. Then a couple of weeks ago I saw a TED talk by Salman Khan where he talked about the Khan Academy (what else?) and its recent improvements. So I went back to the website and signed up.
